Muscle spasms, chronic back pain, and limited mobility after an injury can make every day harder than it needs to be. Electrical muscle stimulation therapy — often called EMS — is a non-invasive treatment that works alongside chiropractic care to address the muscle component of many spinal and soft tissue conditions. For patients throughout the Opelika and Auburn area, it has been part of the therapy approach at Herring Spine & Rehab for decades.
Since 1981, our practice on Gateway Drive in Opelika has treated thousands of patients with back pain, neck pain, injuries, and musculoskeletal conditions. EMS therapy is one of several physiological therapeutics we use to support recovery, and it is frequently part of the treatment plan our doctors build for patients dealing with persistent muscle involvement.
The Auburn-Opelika corridor creates a wide range of physical demands on the people who live and work here. Manufacturing workers near Valley and Lanett, students and athletes at Auburn University, retail and healthcare workers who spend long shifts on their feet, and desk workers along the Tiger Town commercial corridor all put their muscles under different kinds of sustained stress.
Muscle spasms, strains, and atrophy from limited mobility are among the most common soft tissue problems that accompany spinal conditions. A spasming muscle can make an otherwise manageable back problem significantly more painful, and it can interfere with chiropractic adjustments and recovery. When muscles lose strength or coordination after an injury or period of limited use, restoring normal function takes more than rest alone.
Conditions like lower back pain, neck pain from whiplash or postural strain, soft tissue injuries from automobile accidents, and the muscle weakness that develops after surgery or immobilization all create scenarios where EMS therapy can play a meaningful role in the recovery process.
Before incorporating EMS therapy into a treatment plan, our doctors conduct a full evaluation to understand what is happening in both the spine and the surrounding soft tissue. Our facility on Gateway Drive includes an on-site X-ray room with same-day results, so patients receive their report of findings during the same visit rather than waiting for outside imaging.
Our chiropractic physicians hold auxiliary staff privileges at East Alabama Health, giving them the ability to order MRIs, CT scans, and bone density tests when imaging beyond X-ray is needed to fully understand a patient’s condition. The integration between our chiropractic team and the medical providers at Tiger Town Wellness at Herring Spine & Rehab means that both muscular and neurological factors can be considered together when building a treatment plan.
EMS works by delivering low-level electrical impulses through electrode pads placed on the skin over the target muscle group. These impulses mimic the signals the central nervous system sends to trigger muscle contractions, causing the muscles to contract and release in a controlled pattern. The treatment is non-invasive and does not require any incisions, injections, or medications.
The controlled contractions produced by EMS serve several purposes in a chiropractic rehabilitation setting. For patients with muscle spasms, the therapy can help interrupt the spasm cycle and allow the muscle to relax. For patients recovering from injury or limited mobility, repeated contractions help maintain or rebuild muscle strength and prevent atrophy during the healing process. EMS also promotes circulation in the treated area, which supports the delivery of nutrients and removal of waste products that affect tissue recovery.
In our practice, EMS is most often used as part of a broader treatment visit rather than as a standalone session. It is commonly paired with deep moist heat, ultrasound therapy, cold laser therapy, or cryotherapy depending on the nature of the condition and where the patient is in the recovery process. Chiropractic adjustments, spinal strengthening exercises, traction, and decompression are also available within the same facility and are frequently combined with EMS to address both the structural and soft tissue aspects of a condition.
Dr. Ronald D. Herring has been in private practice in Opelika since 1981, and Dr. Rodney D. Herring since 1987. Both received Young Chiropractor of the Year recognition from the Alabama State Chiropractic Association, and Dr. Rod Herring received that organization’s Chiropractor of the Year award in 2019. Dr. Tyler Wilburn, a Palmer College of Chiropractic graduate who grew up in the Auburn-Opelika area, rounds out the chiropractic team.
Medical care through Tiger Town Wellness is provided by Dr. Ronald J. Herring, M.D. — a Mayo Clinic-trained physician — and Nurse Practitioner Jeff Sanders of Troy University. Patients from across Lee County and East Alabama have relied on this practice for injury recovery, chronic pain, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation for over forty years. One patient described the experience plainly: “Swift attention to detail, and machine manipulation followed by electro stimulation and cold packs have really helped my back.” Most major insurance plans are accepted, including BCBS, Aetna, Humana, United Healthcare, and Medicare. No long-term contracts are required.
