Arthritis, chronic back pain, soft tissue injuries, and inflammatory conditions don’t always respond the way patients hope to medication, rest, or conventional treatment. Cold laser therapy — also called low-level laser therapy, or LLLT — gives our doctors at Herring Spine & Rehab another tool for addressing pain and tissue damage at the cellular level, without heat, needles, or side effects.
Our practice on Gateway Drive in Opelika has been treating patients throughout East Alabama since 1981. Cold laser therapy is part of a full suite of physiological therapeutics we use alongside chiropractic care, and it has been valuable for patients dealing with conditions that have a strong inflammatory or cellular repair component — including some that other treatment approaches have struggled to address.
People in the Auburn-Opelika area carry a wide range of physical histories into our office. Longtime residents of Lee County who have spent decades in physical work — on their feet, lifting, or operating equipment in East Alabama’s manufacturing and agricultural sectors — often present with the accumulated joint and soft tissue damage that produces arthritis and chronic inflammation. Athletes at Auburn University and in the surrounding communities experience acute soft tissue injuries that need to heal completely to avoid becoming long-term problems.
Arthritis is one of the most common conditions where cold laser therapy is used in our practice. Both osteoarthritis and inflammatory joint conditions involve cellular degeneration and chronic inflammation that can make daily movement painful and limit mobility over time. Soft tissue injuries — strains, sprains, and tendon damage — also respond well to LLLT when tissue repair at the cellular level is needed. Back pain with an inflammatory component, wound healing challenges, and nerve pain are other areas where cold laser therapy is applied.
The therapy is particularly relevant for patients who either cannot take certain medications, prefer to avoid drug-based treatment, or have found that conventional approaches have not fully addressed their pain.
A thorough evaluation comes before any treatment at our Opelika office. Our on-site X-ray room provides same-day results, with patients receiving their reading and report of findings during the same visit — no scheduling at a separate imaging center or waiting days for results. That imaging helps our doctors understand the structural condition of the spine and joints before determining where cold laser therapy fits.
Our chiropractic physicians hold auxiliary staff privileges at East Alabama Health, which allows them to order MRIs, CT scans, and bone density tests when advanced imaging is needed. For patients with arthritis, soft tissue injuries, or chronic inflammatory conditions, a complete picture of the affected tissue guides a more precise treatment approach. The integration of chiropractic and medical care through Tiger Town Wellness at Herring Spine & Rehab means that conditions with both a structural and inflammatory component can be addressed by both sides of the care team.
Cold laser therapy uses low-intensity light — delivered through a handheld device placed directly on the skin over the treatment area — to stimulate the body’s own cellular repair processes. Unlike surgical lasers, cold lasers do not generate heat. The light energy passes into the tissue and is absorbed by cells, promoting cellular regeneration, reducing localized inflammation, and supporting pain relief without damaging surrounding tissue.
The treatment is entirely painless. Patients feel nothing during the session — no heat, no vibration, and no discomfort. There are no reported side effects, which makes it a practical option for patients whose age, health status, or medication profile limits other treatment choices.
For arthritis, LLLT can reduce joint inflammation and support the health of the surrounding soft tissue, which helps maintain mobility and reduce the chronic pain cycle that arthritis creates. For acute soft tissue injuries, it accelerates the cellular repair process in tissue that may otherwise heal slowly due to limited blood supply. For patients with nerve-related pain, the therapy can help reduce local inflammation that is contributing to nerve irritation.
In our therapy department, cold laser therapy is commonly used alongside ultrasound therapy, electrical muscle stimulation, deep moist heat, cryotherapy, and spinal strengthening exercises. Chiropractic adjustments, traction, and decompression are also available within the same facility and are often part of the same treatment plan. One patient at our practice noted an unexpected application worth mentioning: “I have been receiving laser therapy for the shingles and the amount of discomfort has been extremely reduced.” That kind of real-world versatility reflects the range of conditions where LLLT has demonstrated benefit for our patients.
