Back pain, tendonitis, muscle strains, and joint injuries don’t always stay on the surface. The soft tissue that surrounds and supports the spine — muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia — sits too deep for topical treatments to reach effectively. Chiropractic ultrasound therapy works differently, using high-frequency sound waves to penetrate into those deeper layers and support healing where it’s actually needed.
At Herring Spine & Rehab on Gateway Drive in Opelika, ultrasound therapy has been part of our physiological therapeutics since well before most area patients knew it existed outside of a hospital setting. Since 1981, our practice has treated thousands of patients throughout East Alabama for back pain, neck pain, and soft tissue conditions, and ultrasound therapy is one of several tools our doctors use to address the full picture of a patient’s pain — not just the spinal component.
The physical demands on people throughout Lee County are varied, and the soft tissue injuries they produce reflect that. Athletes at Auburn University push muscles and tendons to their limits during training and competition. Workers in physically demanding jobs across Lanett, Valley, and Smiths Station deal with repetitive stress and strain over years of work. Desk workers along the Tiger Town corridor develop the kind of chronic soft tissue tension that builds gradually and then becomes hard to ignore.
Tendonitis — inflammation of the tendon — is one of the most common conditions where ultrasound therapy provides direct benefit. It develops frequently in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankle from overuse or repetitive motion. Back pain with a significant soft tissue component, joint injuries, and muscle strains that aren’t responding to rest also fit the profile of conditions where the deeper penetration of ultrasound therapy can make a real difference.
Inflammation, cellular stiffness, and restricted blood flow are common threads across most soft tissue conditions. Left unaddressed alongside spinal care, they can slow recovery and make adjustments less effective than they would otherwise be.
Our doctors evaluate each patient’s condition before determining where ultrasound therapy fits into the treatment plan. The on-site X-ray room at our facility provides same-day results, so patients receive their report of findings during the same visit. That imaging gives our doctors a clear picture of what is happening structurally in the spine while their hands-on evaluation addresses the surrounding soft tissue.
When deeper imaging is warranted, our chiropractic physicians hold auxiliary staff privileges at East Alabama Health, which includes the ability to order MRIs, CT scans, and bone density tests. That access means conditions involving tendons, ligaments, and deep tissue can be evaluated thoroughly without requiring patients to go elsewhere. Our integration of chiropractic and medical care through Tiger Town Wellness at Herring Spine & Rehab means that inflammation management and other medical needs can also be addressed within the same practice.
Chiropractic ultrasound therapy uses a handheld transducer to direct high-frequency sound waves into the affected tissue. As those waves pass through the skin and into the soft tissue, they produce gentle mechanical vibration at the cellular level. This generates a mild warming effect deep within the tissue, stimulates blood flow, and encourages the kind of cellular activity associated with tissue repair.
The treatment is painless. Patients typically feel little more than a slight warmth or a mild sensation as the transducer moves across the skin. There are no incisions, no needles, and no recovery time following the session.
For tendonitis, the increased circulation and cellular stimulation ultrasound produces can help reduce the local inflammation that makes tendons painful and stiff. For back pain with a muscular or ligamentous component, it can reduce stiffness and improve tissue pliability, which in turn makes chiropractic adjustments more effective. For joint injuries and strains, it supports the repair process in tissue that does not otherwise receive strong blood supply on its own.
In our therapy department, ultrasound is frequently used alongside electrical muscle stimulation, deep moist heat, cold laser therapy, and cryotherapy depending on the specific condition and stage of healing. Spinal adjustments, traction, and decompression are also available within the same facility and are commonly built into the same treatment plan.
Dr. Ronald D. Herring has been in private practice in Opelika since 1981 and Dr. Rodney D. Herring since 1987. Both received Young Chiropractor of the Year recognition from the Alabama State Chiropractic Association early in their careers, and Dr. Rod Herring received that organization’s Chiropractor of the Year award in 2019. Dr. Tyler Wilburn, a Palmer College graduate who grew up in the Auburn-Opelika area, brings Webster Technique certification and additional clinical depth to the team.
Medical services through Tiger Town Wellness are provided by Dr. Ronald J. Herring, M.D., who completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic and an additional fellowship year as Chief Medical Resident, alongside Nurse Practitioner Jeff Sanders of Troy University. Patients throughout Lee County and East Alabama have relied on this practice for decades. One patient described their experience this way: “When I first went in several years ago with back pain so severe I was afraid that I was going to need surgery, within six months my pain was gone completely.” Most major insurance plans are accepted, including BCBS, Aetna, Humana, United Healthcare, and Medicare. No long-term contracts are required.
